A Histochemical Study of Glycoprote in Mucosa of Nasal Polyp

Abstract
The various glycoprotein in the mucosa, obtained from 25 patients with nasla polyp, were observed histochemically by means of Jones and Reid technique.
The purpose of this study was to know the distribution of various glycoprotein mucosa of various histopathological types (edematous, glandular, and fibrous) and to find out any ciues about the pathogenesis of nasal ployp.
@ES The results were as follows :
@EN 1. Various pathological types were edematous (60%), glandular (20%), and fibrous one (20%)
2. Distribution of glycoprotein in epithelium
1)In the columnar cell ;
i) Acidic glycoprotein was demonstrated in 92% of the cases, which was composed of sulphated (52.2%) and sialylated one (47.8%), and neutral glycoprotein was in 8.0%.
ii) Realtion between various glycoproteins and histopathological types
a) Neutral glycoproteins were observed in edematous type (13.3%)
b) Among the acidic glycoprotein, sialidase sensitive sialylated glycoprotein was found in glandular type (20.0%), while sialidase resistant sialylated giycoprotein was in edematous (61.5%) and glandular (20.0%), and, fibrous type (20.0%).
2) in the gobglet cell ;
sulphomucin was only demonstrated
3) In the basement memgrane;
i) Acidic glycoproteins wer only demonstrated in all cases, which was composed of sulphated (92.0%) and sialidase resistant sialylated one (8.0%
ii) Sialylated glycoprotein was observed in edematous type (6.7%) and in glandular type (20.2%)
3. Distribution of various glycoprotein in subepithelium
1) In the submucosal stroma
sulphatd glycoprotein was only observed
2) In the gland
i) Distribution of glands, which is superior in number, in the stroma wer mucoid (64.0%), and serous one (36.0%)
ii) Prominant serous glnad was found in 46.7% of edematous type and in 40.0% of glanduar type. Whileprominant mucous gland was in 53.3% of edematous, 60.0% of glandular, and 100.0% of fibrous type.
3) Around blood vessel ;
i) acidic glycoprotein was obeserved in 95.6% of cases, which was consist of sulphated (68.2%) and sialidase resistant sialylated one (31.8%)
ii) neutral glycoprotein was obeserved in 7.7% of edematous type
As the resultsof this study, acidic glycoproteins, especially sulphated was more prominant than other one in all tissue of the mucosa of nasal polyp except in the subepithelial gland.
It should be further investigated to find out the mechanism of acidic glycoprotein in nasal polyp.
